Coaching Urban Church Planters Growing Visionary Leaders, Vital Churches and Multiplication Movements in the City
Coaching, a buzzword in the sports and business communities for some time, has only recently been embraced by church planting practitioners. This late adoption is perhaps not strange since leadership development in the church, ever since the early 19th century when it went to an academic model for training ministers, has focused more on knowing than on doing. At Redeemer our interest in coaching peaked as we focused on accomplishing our goal of starting several hundred new churches in the city. We knew that a movement of church planting would be impossible without the helping roles of trainers, supervisors and coaches. Now Allen Thompson’s manual narrows our understanding of coaching. He indicates that coaching lies at the opposite end of the spectrum of telling or instructing. Coaching, rather, is an approach that awakens awareness and responsibility on the part of the church planter. This is done through a relationship of trust that provides feedback through inquiry. Reading this manual will not turn you into an expert coach. But it will help you to recognize the enormous potential of coming along side of a person and offering the wisdom of a listening ear.

This resource manual will walk you through our general office procedures and policies, and an overview of both our pastoral care approach and counseling philosophy. As counselors, we see ourselves as people who have been assigned to hold out hope and point to the power that is in Christ to restore and heal. To define the role and responsibilities of deacons/deaconesses and to serve as a guide for those who currently hold this office; 2. To consolidate the materials used in Redeemer's Diaconate skills training sessions; and 3. To be a resource for any shepherding ministry - in congregational care, client work, or the general encouragement and spiritual health of the body of Christ.

We all experience it. It seems natural to the human experience. It eats at us and shows itself to us in so many different ways: coldness, sarcasm, yelling, rage, self-injury, disrespect, abuse and silence... Do we have to resign to just managing our anger, keeping a tight lid on it, so it does not overflow?
Yet anger is one of God's holy attributes, so therefore we as his image-bearers have the capacity for godly anger. However, since his image in us has been corrupted, we also have the capacity for resentment and hatred. We often start our with what we believe is a righteous anger against injustice, but then something goes wrong: what started out as good, becomes selfish and destructive.
This DVD seeks to help us deal with the fact that we have a problem with anger, but that we can be hopeful as we face it. The Bible is shockingly honest about anger's cause and wonderfully encouraging about it's cure.

How and When to Talk with Your Kids about Sex Being a parent of a teenager is a tall order. There are unique joys and challenges that surface when children enter Jr. High and progress through High School. Among the many, perhaps one of the most pressing of challenges centers around the issues of sex and dating. For many parents, especially if it is their first child entering the teenage years, addressing the subject of sexuality with their children is sometimes neglected and almost always intimidating. Not to mention that both Jr. and Sr. High students are inundated through media, entertainment, and friends about sex and dating, usually in a way that is not in line with a Gospel-centered worldview. But, God has graciously provided wisdom in His Word on how to deal with this important and sometimes challenging issue. Dr. Brent Bounds, Director of Family Ministries here at Redeemer, will host an evening seminar for all parents of upper-level elementary, and Jr. and Sr. High students entitled “How and When To Talk with Your Kids About Sex and Dating.” The meeting will take place Friday, January 22 at 7pm at 1359 Broadway, in the Broadway Conference Room.
